The addition of a long-anticipated spin-off certainly threw things in a refreshing gear for Universal's Fast saga. Following a date change for the ninth installation from April 19, 2019 to April 10, 2020, Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham are set to reunite for their own film when it hits theaters on July 26, 2019.

Johnson, who voiced his interest for a spin-off back in 2013 while doing press for Justin Lin's Furious 6, has been with the franchise since debuting the role of D.S.S. Agent Luke Hobbs in Lin's Fast Five in 2011. Its predecessor, Fast And Furious, was bolstered by franchise star Vin Diesel's return to the fray in a starring and producing role with Lin succeeding his work on The Fast And The Furious: Tokyo Drift. As the hit film series pivoted from street racing to heist adventures and high speed action, Statham emerged in the post-credits of the sixth film evolved in a string of plot twists as a supporting character by this year's The Fate Of The Furious from F. Gary Gray.
“Fast & Furious is one of Universal’s most beloved properties, and we handle every decision we make surrounding this franchise with great care,” Universal Pictures chairman Donna Langley told The Hollywood Reporter. “The global brand of Fast & Furious is strong and full of iconic characters, and we look forward to continuing to build on the film that started it all, as well as expanding into different narratives beginning with our first spinoff.”
Chris Morgan is penning the script with no word yet on who will direct, while the new exclusive report over at The Hollywood Reporter insists Lin, last associated with a Hot Wheels movie, is being eyed with interest for the director's chair on Fast 9. A tenth and final installment of the Fast saga which also stars the late Paul Walker is dated tentatively for April 2, 2021.

Prior to this, Universal and Fast Live Productions are already in the making for the saga's live stunt show tour slated to take off in London on January 19, 2018.
