THE STEWARD: Cristal Picks Up 'John Wick' Franchise Writer's Original Action Spec Script

Screenwriter Derek Kolstad may have his hands busy building further into the violent world of stoic assassin-turned-agent of vengeance John Wick. With a third film in development and the hopeful attachment of director Chad Stahelski who himself is plotting a TV series spin-off along with a reboot of Highlander among other projects, the Wisconsin-native has become a fascinating favorite among action fans paying close attention to what happens to the brewing trilogy.

With that in mind, it bears mentioning, and essentially wondering, the possibilities beyond this franchise with regard to other projects from here on. At current, The Steward has arrived to answer that question per new reports as this, being the title of a new original action thriller which Kolstad is also penning. There aren't any plot details to divulge although the original pitch from Kolstad himself was brought to Cristal Pictures who will fully finance and produce the film in association with Beijing-based parent company, East Light Media, with the goal of building it into franchise.

“Derek is a terrific writer and masterful at creating original, electrifying characters, and we cannot wait to develop this project,” said Cristal president Scott Einbinder...
“The Steward, which is driven by a charismatic lead, possesses the kind of proven genre appeal that has resonated in both the domestic and worldwide markets.”

Nick DeAngelo, acting executive vice-president of production, reportedly brought the pitch to Cristal Pictures prior to sealing the deal in a pre-emptive bid. Cristal is also home to Millenium Films's The Hitman's Bodyguard releasing in August from Lionsgate, as well as the forthcoming China co-production, Twin Blades, from producers Lauren Shuler Donner and Jack Leslie.
