Debut director Mike Wiluan's new film, Buffalo Boys, comes at a great time with the current appreciation that Asian film productions have accrued. Buffalo Boys feels like something made directly for a crowd much larger than folks keen on Asian niche films and especially given the rollicking look it has for what looks to be a splashy, fun and exciting western film of its kind.
It's got Ario Bayu and Yoshi Sudarso who play brothers on an epic mission of vengeance, one that finds them fighting for a small Indonesian village oppressed by Dutch colonial rule. The teaser and trailer footage have all proven exciting with hints of slick, energizing gunbattles and fight action that'll surely have genre fans drooling as the weeks and months pass for a hopefully sooner wider release.
This week, Screenplay Films delivers all that and just a touch more with a second full and official trailer before its July 19 rollout in local cinemas. Summer film festival crowds attending the New York Asian Film Festival and Fantasia Festival at Montreal may want to keep an eye out for this as well.
The following, by way of Fantasia whose programme rolls out its full announcement in just a few weeks:
Genre producer Mike Wiluan (HEADSHOT, BEYOND SKYLINE, MACABRE) leaps into the director’s chair for this searing, screaming action epic set during the Dutch occupation of Indonesia. When all seems lost in a small town overrun by colonialist violence, two revenge-seeking brothers arrive, meting out bloody justice that leaps effortlessly between brutal Western gunslinging and stylized Eastern swordplay. Starring a gorgeous cast featuring HEADSHOT’s Sunny Pang and THE RAID 2’s Alex Abbad, BUFFALO BOYS (World Premiere) is a virtual who’s who of Indonesia’s finest action and stunt talent that will knock your skull through the back of the cinema.Watch the brand new trailer below, and if you have a good eye and are familiar with the director, try and spot him. He gets an appearance as well!
