FAST & FURIOUS Saga Swerves To Netflix

I'm inclined to wonder if Netflix's plans for an animated serial spin-off to Universal Pictures's hit Fast & Furious franchise will have the same trippy video game-esque visage as the opening and closing credits for the films. Apart from that, a press announcement on Monday is also revealing a photo that could lend a closer idea in that department which you can see above; I actually thought a live-action drama might have been the way to go for all of Vin Diesel's moves to TV in recent memory, but I guess not.

Alas, the streaming service is teaming up with DreamWorks Animation Television in this, the first series in an expansion of their ongoing multi-year deal for original animated kids and family programming. The update comes following Comcast-NBCUniversal's acquisition of the animation studio in 2016 with the former maintaining a First Look with the option to expand on Universal film properties such as the one launched in 2001 before becoming the global phenomenon it is today.
Teenager Tony Toretto follows in the footsteps of his cousin Dom when he and his friends are recruited by a government agency to infiltrate an elite racing league serving as a front for a nefarious crime organization bent on world domination.
Voltron Legendary Defender's Tim Hedrick and All Hail King Julien's Bret Haaland are executive producing and showrunning. Diesel is also executive producing the series along with Neal Moritz and Chris Morgan, all of whom still share a role on the on-going film saga through the tenth installment opening in April of 2021. The streaming service is further expected to develop more shows based on Universal IPs as will DreamWorks Animation with original content.
"We are thrilled to take our fantastic partnership with DreamWorks Animation to the next level with new opportunities from the vast library of Universal Pictures," said Melissa Cobb, Vice President of Kids and Family. "The Fast & Furious franchise is a global phenomenon beloved by audiences of all ages, and we can't wait to get started on the new animated series that will capture the action, heart, humor and global appeal of the feature films."

"We are excited to extend and expand our successful relationship with Netflix by not only delivering more high-quality DreamWorks programming, but connecting fans of Universal films with fascinating new stories," said Margie Cohn, President of DreamWorks Animation Television. "Our new home at Universal marks an exciting new chapter for storytelling at our studio, and Fast & Furious is only the beginning."
