You have to give it to 20th Century Fox for their ability to mine YA sci-fi with a keen sense of superhero potential. Succeeding for nearly two decades with the X-Men franchise is a sure plus and so leave it to the studio along with the people behind Stranger Things and Arrival to harbor Alexandra Bracken's 2012 novel, The Darkest Minds, for Kung Fu Panda franchise co-helmer Jennifer Yuh Nelson to deliver in fitting fashion.
When teens mysteriously develop powerful new abilities, they are declared a threat by the government and detained. Sixteen-year-old Ruby, one of the most powerful young people anyone has encountered, escapes her camp and joins a group of runaway teens seeking safe haven. Soon this newfound family realizes that, in a world in which the adults in power have betrayed them, running is not enough and they must wage a resistance, using their collective power to take back control of their future. The Hunger Games co-star Amandla Stenberg leads the cast from a screenplay by noted TV scribe Chad Hodge and with Mandy Moore and Star Wars franchise co-star Gwendoline Christie also starring among a sprawling YA-centric cast. With the official trailer now online, Fox has penned a release date for August 3, and with stunning, epic visuals that build from brooding, drab dystopia to exciting, climatic and spectacular flair.
