Gavin O'Connor Takes The Helm For SUICIDE SQUAD 2

Say what you will of David Ayer's 2016 hit, Suicide Squad. Critiques notwithstanding, that Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment managed to snag up to $746 million dollars in global gross spoke only to its sequel potential moving forward while hopefully the studio gets its ducks in a row with its own line-up of DC adaptations leading up to Justice League in November and thereafter.

This brings questions regarding who will direct, which, in turn, now reveals Deadline's latest report sharing news of Warrior helmer Gavin O'Connor who will instead helm the brewing sequel. O'Connor's name is one of several that have circulated in the past year, particularly Ayer who left the sequel in July prior to Jaume Collet-Serra turning it down. Will Smith, Margot Robbie and Jared Leto are expected to reprise their roles as Deadshot, Harley Quinn and Joker.

Plot details and specifics aren't yet known while a sequel could also potentially bring O'Connor together once more with actor Ben Affleck who cameoed in the first film as Batman/Bruce Wayne; Affleck starred in O'Connor's 2016 crime thriller, The Accountant, for which both actor and director are positioning a sequel with a script by Bill Dubuque and the possible return of actor Jon Bernthal who stars in Netflix series, The Punisher, later this year.

Ayer is developing Gotham City Sirens following the fan favor actress Margot Robbie earned for her portrayal last year. The Hangover trilogy director Todd Phillips is on hand for a Joker origin film while we await what lies ahead with Focus and Whiskey Tango Foxtrot helmers Glenn Ficarra and John Requa for their own iteration that gives the notorious criminal couple their own movie.

O'Connor is also on board and developing a cinematic, badass revival of The Green Hornet for Chernin Entertainment and Paramount.
