Warner Bros. still plans on rebooting the Hal Needham-directed Cannonball Run franchise following its announcement last year. These days however, the word now is that the studio is seeking to attach Dodgeball helmer Rawson Marshall Thurber to the direct the reimagining, and is also in discussions with Thomas Lennon and Robert Ben Garant (Night At The Museum trilogy) to assemble the script.

The news comes with Get Hard scribe Etan Cohen's departure after being attached to the film in March of 2016 for a revival of the Golden Harvest-produced original comedy trilogy in 1981, inspired by the Cannonball Baker Sea-To-Shining-Sea Memorial Trophy Dash of the 1970's. The story focused on an illgeal cross-country race and its contestants willing to pull their own dirty tricks to achieve victory, with all three films host to a bevy of popular celebs in some capacity, including Burt Reynolds, Frank Sinatra, Roger Moore, Dean Martin to name a few along with Sammy Davis Jr., Dom DeLuise, John Candy and even Jackie Chan during his earlier efforts to crossover from Hong Kong. 20th Century Fox, Warner Bros. Pictures and Orion Pictures each released the first, second and third film, respectively.

Andre Morgan who executive produced the original trilogy, and Vikings series producer Alan Gasmer are producing the film with Albert S. Ruddy and Raymond Chow executive producing. Thurber is currently tapped to reunite with Central Intelligence star Dwayne Johnson for Skyscraper ahead of its Summer release in 2018 from Legendary Pictures and Universal Pictures. (Deadline)
