Mark your calendars for a special two-night event this April when Fathom Events and RiffTrax team up for RiffTrax Live: Samurai Cop in select theaters. The event, hosted by MST3K pesonalities Michael J. Nelson, Kevin Murphy, and Bill Corbett, marks the 24th broadcast between both compaines since partnering in 2009 with titles including Paul Verhoeven's Starship Troopers, as well as horror classic Night Of The Living Dead and MST3K: The Reunion Show.
Directed by Amir Shervan, the 1991 epic fail west-meets-east cop flick stars Matt Hannon as detective and modern-day samurai warrior Joe Marshall. Together with partner Frank Washington played by Mark Frazier, the two set out on a deadly mission to take down a notorious Japanese drug gang and its pony-tailed enforcer, played by the late, legendary Robert Z'dar, in a film easily summed up by its obviously flawed production value as its greatest asset by far, for better or hilariously worse for its cinematic legacy - one currently lived on now in last year's sequel, Samurai Cop: Deadly Vengeance, from director Hatanaka Gregory.
“It’s hard to say exactly what makes Samurai Cop a favorite to us and our audience: maybe the fact that the title character is not a samurai - not even a little.” said Nelson. “It could also be the terrible black wig he wears for half the scenes in the movie and tries to pass off as real hair. Whatever the reason it must be seen to be believed,”
“’Samurai Cop’ is a great way for RiffTrax to kick off a 2017 cinema season,” Fathom Events CEO John Rubey said. “Movie audiences know that, year-after-year, laughs at ‘RiffTrax Live’ events are guaranteed.”
RiffTrax Live: Samurai Cop is slated for April 13 at 8:00pm Eastern and Pacific Standard Time/7:00pm Central and Mountain Time, and then on Tuesday, April 18 at 7:30pm local time. Tickets can be purchased online at the official Fathom Events website with up to 700 theaters listed through Fathom’s Digital Broadcast Network, and just to give you a sample of what you may be in for if you're new to RiffTrax, check out a clip below, and then imagine hearing a fresh, live skit full of jokes throughout the film's runtime...
I recommend bringing friends to these! Just sayin'.
